Of all the summer constellations, Scorpius is one of the most popular. Lots of bright stars and a distinctive shape make it an attractive area for all amateur astronomers. It has Antares, one of the three most strongly colored 1st-magnitude stars in the sky (the others are Betelgeuse and Aldebaran ). The major drawback is that, Scorpius is so low in the south for mid-northern latitudes that it's gone before you know it. It puts on a good evening appearance over the treetops only in June and July. The objects here need a good map to find them.
The objects M19 and M62 are located just across the Scorpius border in Ophiuchus and were included here because of their proximity to the central Scorpius region. |
