Messier 58

M58 is a spiral galaxy of type SBc in the constellation Virgo, although the bar is not prominent and some have classified it as intermediate between normal and barred spirals. M58 is a member of the Virgo Cluster of galaxies, which is the dominant cluster in our Local Supercluster and about 60 million light-years away.

In a 8-inch scope at 49X, this galaxy is easy to find, as it lies in a nearly straight line with M60 and M59, except about twice the distance. There is a distracting bright star nearby, much brighter than the galaxy itself. Even though it is a spiral galaxy, the arms were not visible, and it appeared to be elliptical. This galaxy is about the same brightness as M59. The core appears stellar, but only with averted vision.
