Messier 53

M53 is a globular cluster in the constellation Coma Berenices. It is an outlying globular, being about 60,000 light-years distant both from us and from the Galactic Center.

In a 8-inch scope, this globular cluster is fairly small, compared to the other Messier globulars. The best view was at 122x. At this magnification, the outer edges of the cluster are just barely starting to resolve. There appears to be a couple of field stars really close to the edge of the cluster, making it difficult to determine exactly how well the edges are being resolved.
