8. NGC1952 (M1) Crab Nebula
The discovery of this nebula in 1758 prompted Charles Messier to compile his celebrated catalogue. It is the remnant of a supernova that exploded in 1054. M1 appears as a round blue glow in small telescopes, but an 8-inch or larger can show some traces of internal structure. Richard Wilds from Topeka, Kansas, has glimpsed the Crab nebula in 35-mm binoculars, and in truly dark skies it is always visible in a finder.
