Because of its distinctive smoke-ring appearance, which is visible in a 4-inch at 40 to 100 power, M57 is the showpiece of planetary nebulae, being rivaled only by M27. It is also very easy to locate, for it lies on a line between the conspicuous naked-eye stars Beta and Gamma Lyrae.
